Orthopedics is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system, the "framework" that includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerves.
Musculoskeletal problems affect one out of every four people in the United States -- and those numbers are expected to increase as our "baby boomer" generation becomes older and increases its risk of injuries from falls and accidents, as well as its incidence of age-related diseases such as osteoporosis and arthritis.
From the neck and shoulders to the feet and ankles, musculoskeletal problems can strike nearly every area of your body. According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons: Arthritis is the leading chronic condition reported by the elderly. Back or spine injuries are the most prevalent musculoskeletal conditions. Sprains or dislocations and fractures account for almost half of all musculoskeletal injuries.
More than half of athletic injuries occur in the knee. Knees are treated by orthopedic surgeons more often than any other part of the body.
Carpal tunnel syndrome accounts for more than two million physician visits a year.
Other conditions treated by orthopedic specialists include joint replacement, major orthopedic trauma, musculoskeletal tumors and reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Beyer conducts orthopedic clinic the first, third and fifth Wednesday from 12:30 – 3:30 p.m. in the specialty services area. Appointments can be made by calling 618-635-2200. No physician referral is required.
