Community Hospital of Staunton has been delivering high-quality healthcare to the Staunton and Macoupin County region since 1951. Licensed by the Illinois Department of Public Health, it is a 25-bed, short-stay, not-for-profit, and non-denominational hospital. Our highly trained medical staff, state-of-the-art technology, and multi-bed medical care units enable us to offer a wide range of emergency and specialty services.
History of Staunton Hospital
Community Hospital of Staunton has evolved through several phases of construction and renovation. Initially, the former North Grade School was transformed into Community Memorial Hospital, which opened on January 1, 1951, as a tribute to local veterans. The 49-bed hospital featured diagnostic radiology, laboratory services, and a 24-hour emergency room, born from the community's need for closer medical care due to frequent injuries in local coal mines.
Over the years, the hospital expanded with additions in 1959, 1961, and 1963, including spaces for food storage, a generator, and expanded medical facilities. A significant three-story addition in 1966 addressed overcrowding, adding patient rooms, X-ray facilities, and office space.
The most extensive renovation occurred in 2016, a $14 million project that included a new emergency department, laboratory, and patient registration area. The community partially funded this project, raising over $1 million. Following this upgrade, the hospital was affiliated with Anderson Hospital in Maryville, Illinois, and was renamed Community Hospital of Staunton, an Anderson Healthcare Partner, allowing it to enhance and expand its services.
