  • Physicians
  • Registered nurses
  • Dietitians
  • Pharmacists

Together, we aim to provide holistic care and support for optimal cardiovascular and pulmonary health and recovery.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Phases

Cardiac rehabilitation is comprised of three key phases, focusing on the importance of exercise, dietary improvements, and cultivating a healthier lifestyle. It is designed for anyone diagnosed with cardiac problems within the past year, aiming to transform their approach to movement, nutrition, and overall wellness.

Diagnosis requirements for cardiac rehabilitation include:

  • Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG)
  • Coronary stent/angioplasty
  • Heart attack
  • Heart transplant
  • Heart valve replacement or repair
  • Stable angina
  • Stable heart failure

Participants benefit from the safety of a medically supervised program and receive personalized attention from trained experts. Community Hospital of Staunton offers Phase 2 and Phase 3 of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase 2 (Outpatient)

Phase 2 starts after hospital discharge and requires a physician's order and exercise prescription. The goal of Phase 2 is to foster positive lifestyle changes through education and physical conditioning, enabling you to resume normal activities gradually. Participants also benefit from group support by interacting with others who are facing similar challenges.

Physical conditioning involves slowly and progressively increasing time, resistance, and speed using equipment like treadmills, NuStep machines, and ergometers. Hand weights and weight training are integral to our conditioning program.

Throughout exercise sessions, blood pressure, pulse, and heart rhythm are closely monitored. The cardiac rehab team also provides counseling and educational classes on diet, nutrition, exercise, stress management, medications, smoking cessation, and risk factors for cardiopulmonary diseases. Our exercise sessions are typically three days a week, up to 36 sessions.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phase 3

Phase 3 serves as the maintenance phase, focusing on maintaining or improving fitness levels through supervised exercise sessions. Participants are encouraged to become more independent during this phase, which is offered at a nominal fee as most insurances do not cover maintenance programs.

Supervised Exercise Training (SET) Program

Walking Program for Cardiac Rehabilitation

The Community Hospital of Staunton offers the Supervised Exercise Training (SET) Program as the first line of treatment recommended by the American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association (ACCF/AHA) for individuals with peripheral artery disease. This program aims to alleviate symptoms, reduce overall cardiovascular risk, prevent amputation, maintain walking and functional abilities, and enhance quality of life.

  • Interstitial lung disease
  • Lung cancer and lung cancer surgery
  • Lung volume reduction surgery
